WILKES COUNTY TEAMS READY FOR 2016 SEASON

The day that Wilkes County high school football teams have been waiting for since last November is here. After a summer filled with workouts, 7-on-7’s and mini camps, high school football teams all across the state of North Carolina will hit the field today for the first official day of practice. Coming off its first winning season since 2012, Wilkes Central and third-year Head Coach Ron Turner look to build off last year’s 10-3 mark. The Eagles will be the first county high school to practice when they hit the field at 9 this morning in preparation for their regular season opener against North Iredell on Aug. 19. East Wilkes won its first conference championship since 1995 last fall and advanced to the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1AA state playoffs. The Cardinals, who finished the regular season undefeated for the first time since 1981, will hold their first official practice at 3:45 p.m. East Wilkes will open the season with a week one match up with South Stokes in Walnut Cove. After making its first NCHSAA playoff appearance since 2012 last fall, West Wilkes takes the field at 5 p.m. today. The Blackhawks will prepare for their week one opener at state 1AA runner-up Mitchell. At 6 p.m., North Wilkes will take to the field in Hays to open up its fall season. The Vikings are coming off a 1-10 campaign in 2015 but return the county’s top wide receiver from last year, Daniel Pruitt, as well as running back Jarrett Grimes, who rushed for 1,089 yards last season. North Wilkes will prepare for its regular season opener at West Caldwell. Other key dates for the football season: Aug. 10 — start of scrimmages Sept. 23 — start of MVAC play Nov. 4 — final regular season contests Nov. 11 — start of the NCHSAA playoffs
